CHAPTER THIRTY

Eddie

As he sat down to eat dinner, the first thing that struck Eddie was the silence. It was as if the world had stopped breathing, the chaotic sounds of the last few days replaced by an ominous hush which was somehow worse than all the other stuff.

He was alone in his dimly lit house on the outskirts of Asheville, a swanky bachelor pad he’d purchased when he first moved to the town, a plate of food steaming on the table in front of him. He took a moment to switch his hand-crank radio on, the drone filling the room, frantic voices detailing the widespread chaos that was unfolding in every corner of the globe, the grim news better than the iniquitous quiet.

Eddie glanced at his cell phone as he ate his canned chili, barely chewing before he swallowed, the screen displaying No Service. He’d been trying to reach June and the others all afternoon to remind them he’d be over in the morning, once he’d finished the last of the tasks he wanted to complete, but the lines seemed to be down completely. He’d even tried Sarah, but of course there’d been no answer. He hoped she was safe in Manhattan, though he couldn’t shake a gnawing sense of worry. She was there for her estranged mother’s funeral, and the timing couldn’t have been worse.

He returned his attention to his food, eating quickly. The usually bright living room was bathed in an intermittent glow, the electricity wavering like a frail heartbeat, like it might give up at any moment, while the TV lay dark. The images on his TV before it went black still haunted him—violence, looting, riots, and then the ominous government warnings. The world he knew was tearing at the seams, the fabric of society shredding under the strain of the catastrophe.

Eddie finished his hasty meal and rubbed his temples, his mind racing with worry as he went through his mental to do list. He wanted to get everything sorted before he went to June’s house, and even though he had prepared for the crisis, the reality was much worse than his grim predictions. The banking sector was paralyzed, all digital money records vanished. It was as if a giant eraser had swept through the virtual world, wiping out lifetimes of earnings, savings, debt—everything. The implications were terrifying.

The sudden silence of the radio startled him. He fumbled, tuning the knob in search of a functioning station. It was a small link to the world outside his dimly lit fortress, a slender thread keeping him connected to a crumbling reality, but it was useless, he couldn’t locate another station. Maybe the regulars were taking a break... maybe it was something else.

With the broadcast gone, an urge to do something, anything, filled Eddie, and he got to his feet, glancing at his watch. Even though it was dark and there was that pointless curfew, he could check on one of his stashes not too far from the house—over the
